South India Tour Plan 2026 — Ooty, Kodaikanal, Rameshwaram & More

South India Tour Plan 2026 — Ooty, Kodaikanal, Rameshwaram & More

For a lot of North Indians, "South India" means Ooty and Kerala — and that's about where the mental map ends. Which is a shame, because Tamil Nadu alone has enough variety to fill two separate trips. You've got the Nilgiris (hill stations in the clouds), the Pandyan temples of Madurai (some of the most elaborate architecture in India), Rameshwaram (an island temple town where the water is three different shades of blue), and Kodaikanal (a hill station that's quieter, cooler, and arguably prettier than Ooty).

This guide lays out a practical South India tour plan for 2026 — destinations, budget, timing, and an itinerary that connects the dots without burning you out on bus rides.

Best Destinations in Tamil Nadu & South India

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) — The Queen of Hill Stations

Ooty sits at 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri Hills and stays between 10–25°C year-round — which makes it a great escape from plains heat in any season. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train from Mettupalayam) is a UNESCO World Heritage ride that switchbacks through 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. The Botanical Gardens (established 1848, 22 hectares) are genuinely impressive, not just a "photo spot." Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak (highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637m), and the tea plantations around the Toda settlements complete the picture.

  • Time needed: 2–3 days

  • Best time: October–June (monsoon July–September brings heavy rain)

  • Budget: ₹2,500–₹4,000/day per person

Kodaikanal — The Princess of Hill Stations

Kodaikanal is the hill station you go to when Ooty feels too crowded. At 2,133 metres in the Palani Hills, it's slightly warmer than Ooty but significantly less touristy outside of holidays. The star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake (you can cycle around it in 45 minutes), Coaker's Walk (a 1-km promenade with views into the plains 2,000 metres below), and the Guna Caves make for a solid 2-day stay. The homemade chocolate shops on the main road are a Kodaikanal institution — try the dark chocolate fudge.

  • Time needed: 2 days

  • Best time: October–June

  • Budget: ₹2,000–₹3,500/day per person

Madurai — The Temple City

Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the Meenakshi Amman Temple is its centerpiece — 14 gopurams (gateway towers) covered in thousands of painted stucco figures, a thousand-pillar hall, and a golden lotus tank. Even if temple architecture isn't usually your thing, Meenakshi will change your mind. The evening ceremony where the deity is ceremonially "put to sleep" draws hundreds of devotees and is oddly moving.

Beyond the temple: Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal (a 17th-century palace that's 75% demolished but still impressive), the Vaigai River, and Madurai's street food — especially the kari dosa (mutton dosa) and jigarthanda (a sweet cold drink unique to Madurai).

  • Time needed: 1–2 days

  • Best time: October–March (summer is extremely hot, 40°C+)

  • Budget: ₹1,500–₹3,000/day per person

Rameshwaram — Where Land Meets Ocean

Rameshwaram is an island connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge — the second longest sea bridge in India, and one of the most dramatic arrivals you can experience on a train. The Ramanathaswamy Temple has the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in India (1,220 metres), and the tradition of bathing in 22 sacred wells (theerthams) inside the temple is something you won't find anywhere else.

Beyond the temple: Dhanushkodi (the ghost town at the tip of the island, destroyed by a cyclone in 1964), the APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial, and the oddly beautiful turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mannar.

  • Time needed: 1–2 days

  • Best time: October–April

  • Budget: ₹1,500–₹2,500/day per person

Coonoor — Ooty's Quieter Neighbour

Coonoor is 19 km from Ooty but feels like a different world. Fewer tourists, better tea estates (the tea factory tours here are more authentic), and views from Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock that rival anything in the Nilgiris. If you're already in Ooty, adding a night in Coonoor is worth it for the pace change alone.

South India 8-Day Itinerary

Day 1–2: Arrive Coimbatore → Ooty

Fly into Coimbatore, drive to Ooty (3 hours via Mettupalayam). Or take the toy train from Mettupalayam (5 hours, book months ahead — it sells out). Spend two days exploring Ooty — Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta, tea plantations, Ooty Lake.

Day 3: Ooty → Coonoor → Kodaikanal

Morning in Coonoor (Dolphin's Nose, tea factory). Then drive to Kodaikanal (250 km, 6 hours via Palani). The drive passes through the plains before climbing back into the Palani Hills — dramatic landscape shifts.

Day 4: Kodaikanal

Full day — cycle around the lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves, chocolate shopping. Kodaikanal is best experienced slowly.

Day 5: Kodaikanal → Madurai

Drive down to Madurai (120 km, 3 hours). Afternoon: Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal. Evening: temple ceremony, street food in the lanes around the temple (kari dosa, jigarthanda).

Day 6: Madurai → Rameshwaram

Drive to Rameshwaram (175 km, 3.5 hours). Cross the Pamban Bridge. Visit Ramanathaswamy Temple, bathe in the 22 theerthams (takes about 2 hours), APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial. Stay overnight on the island.

Day 7: Rameshwaram → Dhanushkodi → Madurai

Early morning drive to Dhanushkodi (20 km, 30 minutes) — the ghost town at India's southeastern tip. Surreal landscape — sand, ruins, and where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. Return to Madurai by afternoon.

Day 8: Madurai → Departure

Fly out from Madurai airport (well-connected to Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi). Or take an overnight train if you prefer.
