How to Reach Meghalaya from Kanpur (or Anywhere in India)
The gateway to Meghalaya is Guwahati, Assam. There is no commercial airport in Meghalaya itself (Shillong has a small one at Umroi with limited flights).
By air: Fly to Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport). Direct flights from Delhi (2.5 hours, ₹4,000–₹8,000), Kolkata (1 hour, ₹3,000–₹5,000). From Kanpur, take a connecting flight via Delhi or Kolkata.
By train: Kanpur to Guwahati by train takes 24-30 hours. The Rajdhani or Brahmaputra Mail are the best options (₹1,200–₹3,500 depending on class).
Guwahati to Shillong: 100 km, 3-3.5 hours by shared Sumo/taxi (₹300–₹500 per seat) or private cab (₹2,500–₹3,500). The road is scenic — you climb steadily from the Assam plains into the Khasi Hills.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Meghalaya?
The best months are October to April. The monsoon retreats by late September, waterfalls are still full, and the weather is cool and clear. October-November is particularly stunning — temperatures around 15-22°C, clear skies, and the landscape is peak green.
March-April is also excellent — slightly warmer (18-25°C), wildflowers blooming, and the famous Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival happens in November (yes, Northeast India has cherry blossoms).
Avoid June to September unless you enjoy walking in heavy rain. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram receive the bulk of their 12,000+ mm annual rainfall during these months. Roads get waterlogged, treks become slippery, and visibility drops. Some living root bridge trails become unsafe.
How Much Does a Meghalaya Trip Cost in 2026?
Meghalaya is reasonably affordable once you get there. The biggest expense is the flight to Guwahati.

Shillong — The Scotland of the East
Meghalaya's capital is a charming hill town at 1,500 metres. Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum (one of the best museums in Northeast India — 7 floors covering tribal cultures), and the Police Bazaar area for shopping and street food. Shillong also has a surprisingly good live music and cafe scene — the Khasi people love rock music, and you will find small bars with live bands on weekends.
Cherrapunji (Sohra) — Beyond the Rain
Famous as the wettest place on Earth (Mawsynram nearby technically holds the record now, but Cherrapunji is the one everyone knows). The Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres — is jaw-dropping. Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave (a limestone cave you walk through in about 20 minutes), and the Eco Park viewpoint are all within a 15 km radius.
Double Decker Living Root Bridge — Nongriat Village
The star attraction of Meghalaya. These bridges are not built — they are grown. The Khasi and Jaintia tribes train the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across rivers, and over 15-30 years, the roots thicken into living bridges strong enough to hold 50 people. The double-decker bridge at Nongriat requires a trek of about 3,500 steps down (and the same back up). It takes 2-3 hours each way. The natural pool below the bridge is perfect for a swim. Spend a night at the village homestay if your legs can handle the return climb the next morning.
Dawki — The Crystal River
Dawki, on the India-Bangladesh border, is home to the Umngot River — so transparent that boats appear to float in mid-air. The viral photos are not edited. The water is genuinely that clear, especially from November to March. A boat ride costs ₹500–₹800 for 30-45 minutes. The Dawki border area also has Balat, a traditional Jaintia market town worth a quick stop.
Mawlynnong — Asia's Cleanest Village
A small Khasi village that has earned the title of Asia's cleanest village. Every home maintains bamboo dustbins, paths are swept daily, and the entire village runs on community cleanliness norms. There is a living root bridge here too (shorter and easier to reach than Nongriat), plus a sky walk — a bamboo platform on a large tree giving panoramic views of the Bangladesh plains below.

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong
Arrive Guwahati. Drive to Shillong (3 hours). Afternoon visit to Ward's Lake and Don Bosco Museum. Evening walk through Police Bazaar — pick up local snacks and Khasi handloom shawls. Dinner at a cafe in Laitumkhrah area.
Day 2: Shillong to Cherrapunji
Drive to Cherrapunji (2.5 hours). Visit Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, and the Eco Park. Stay overnight in Cherrapunji — several decent guesthouses and homestays available (₹1,000–₹2,000).
Day 3: Living Root Bridge Trek

Day 4: Dawki & Mawlynnong
Drive to Dawki (3 hours from Cherrapunji). Boat ride on the Umngot River. Then drive to Mawlynnong village (30 minutes). Walk the village, see the living root bridge, climb the sky walk. Drive back to Shillong (3 hours). This is a long day but covers two iconic spots.
Day 5: Shillong & Departure
Morning visit to Laitlum Canyons (30 km from Shillong — the "Grand Canyon of Meghalaya," genuinely dramatic views). Return to Shillong for lunch. Drive to Guwahati for your evening flight or train.
Essential Tips for Meghalaya
Fitness matters: The Nongriat root bridge trek is not casual. If you have knee issues, skip it or take it very slow.
Carry cash: ATMs are available in Shillong and Cherrapunji but unreliable in smaller villages. UPI works at some shops but not everywhere.
Hire a local cab for the entire trip: Public transport between attractions barely exists. A hired Sumo with a driver who knows the roads is the way to go.
Respect local culture: The Khasi are a matrilineal society — children take the mother's surname. Ask before photographing people or their homes.
Pack layers: Shillong and Cherrapunji get cool, especially in the evenings (10-15°C from November to February). A light jacket is essential even in October.
