September through November is when this circuit is at its best — the monsoon clears out, the air is washed clean, and the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks are visible from Kausani in a way they simply aren't during hazier months. Why Kumaon Works Right Now — September to November 2026
Uttarakhand's own tourism data pegs September to November as the state's clearest-sky window, right after the monsoon clouds move out and before winter chill sets in. Kumaon — the eastern half of the state, built around Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh districts — benefits the most from this because its hill stations sit lower than Garhwal's high-altitude routes, so roads stay open and driving conditions stay comfortable well into winter.
It's also the quieter half of Uttarakhand. Garhwal gets the Char Dham and Valley of Flowers crowds; Kumaon's lake towns and cantonment hill stations see a fraction of the footfall, even in peak season.
The 6-Day Kumaon Circuit: Nainital to Kausani
This route strings together five hill towns that sit close enough to each other that you spend your time sightseeing, not stuck in the car — a genuine problem on longer Himalayan circuits.
Day 1–2: Nainital, Bhimtal & Sattal
The drive from Kanpur to Nainital covers roughly 415–420 km and takes about 8–9 hours by road via Bareilly, so leave early or plan an overnight halt. Once there, spend a day around Naini Lake — boating, Mall Road, the Naina Devi Temple, and the Snow View Point ropeway for a first look at the peaks. On day two, head out to Bhimtal (about 7 km, 20 minutes from Nainital) for its own lake and island aquarium, then Sattal (roughly 9 km further), a cluster of seven interconnected lakes known for birdwatching and a much quieter pace than Nainital proper.

Day 3: Mukteshwar
Mukteshwar is about 30 minutes from Bhimtal and sits higher up, surrounded by apple and apricot orchards. The main draw is Chauli Ki Jaali, a sheer cliff-edge viewpoint with wide Himalayan views, alongside the old Mukteshwar Dham temple. It's also become a small hub for paragliding and short treks, and the pace here is deliberately slow — cafes, orchard walks, sunset at the cliff edge.
Day 4–5: Ranikhet
Ranikhet is around 80 km and 2–3 hours from Mukteshwar. This is a former British-era cantonment town, and it still feels like one — pine-lined roads, the Kumaon Regimental Centre museum, Chaubatia Gardens, and the Jhula Devi Temple tucked inside an oak forest. It's the calmest stop on this circuit and a good place to slow the trip down for a night or two.
Day 6: Kausani
Kausani is about two hours from Ranikhet by road. This is the itinerary's payoff stop — a single-street hill town with an uninterrupted view of the Nanda Devi and Trishul ranges from almost every hotel balcony. Visit the Anasakti Ashram, where Gandhi stayed and wrote in 1929, and a local tea estate before heading back. From here, most travellers route back to Kanpur via Kathgodam, the nearest railhead — figure on a half-day-plus drive to get there, then onward by road or train.
How Much Does a Kumaon Trip Cost in 2026?
Uttarakhand tourism data puts the statewide range at roughly ₹1,500–₹4,000 per person per day for accommodation, food and local transport, and Kumaon's smaller hill towns generally sit toward the lower-to-mid end of that band compared to Nainital in peak season. For a 6-day, 5-night circuit for two people, that works out to a wide range depending on hotel category and whether you're using a private cab or shared transport — private car hire for the full loop is usually the single biggest line item, more than accommodation or food. Adventure add-ons like paragliding in Mukteshwar or boating at Bhimtal/Sattal cost extra and vary by operator.
How to Reach Kumaon from Kanpur, Lucknow and Delhi
Kanpur and Lucknow travellers drive directly to Nainital via Bareilly — no need to route through Delhi, which is what makes this circuit particularly convenient for a Kanpur-based trip. Delhi travellers typically drive via Rudrapur/Haldwani, a similar 7–8 hour stretch. The nearest railhead for the whole region is Kathgodam, and the nearest airport is Pantnagar, though flight frequency there is limited — most visitors from UP travel this circuit by road or a road-plus-rail combination.
How Many Days Do You Need for a Kumaon Circuit?
A comfortable Kumaon circuit needs 5–6 days if you want to cover Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet and Kausani without rushing. If you're working with just the Ganesh Chaturthi long weekend and can't extend it, a shorter 3–4 day version focused on Nainital, Bhimtal and Mukteshwar alone is realistic and still worth the drive — save Ranikhet and Kausani for a longer trip.
Is the Kumaon Circuit Good for Families and Group Tours?
Yes — this is one of the more low-effort Himalayan circuits for families and groups, since the towns sit close together, roads are in generally good condition for most of the year, and there's no trekking or permit requirement involved, unlike Garhwal routes such as the Valley of Flowers or Char Dham. It also works well for group tours from Kanpur since a single private vehicle can comfortably cover the whole loop.
