Kashmir doesn't have one "best" season — it has four completely different experiences. The valley that gives you tulip fields in April gives you chest-deep snow in January. The houseboat that costs ₹3,000 a night in March costs ₹8,000 in June. Knowing when to go is the difference between a dream trip and a disappointing one.
This guide breaks down every month so you can pick the window that fits your budget, your crowd tolerance, and the Kashmir you actually want to see.

Month-by-Month Breakdown
January — Deep Winter, Real Snow
Temperature: -2°C to 4°C in Srinagar, -8°C in Gulmarg
January is Kashmir at its most dramatic — frozen Dal Lake, Gulmarg buried in snow, and Pahalgam looking like a postcard. This is peak skiing season at Gulmarg (India's only proper ski resort), and hotel rates drop 30-40% from summer peaks.
Do: Skiing and snowboarding in Gulmarg, frozen lake walks, snow trekking
Skip if: You can't handle extreme cold or road closures (Srinagar-Jammu highway shuts occasionally)
Pro tip: The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (₹800) runs year-round, but Phase 2 (₹1,600, goes to 3,950m) may close during heavy snowfall
February — Snow + Fewer Crowds Than January
Temperature: -1°C to 7°C in Srinagar
February is the sweet spot for snow lovers who don't want January's extreme cold. The snow is still thick, skiing continues in Gulmarg, and you'll find better hotel deals than December-January. By late February, the first signs of spring start showing at lower altitudes.
Do: Skiing (season continues until mid-March), Shikara ride on partly-frozen Dal Lake
Budget: ₹2,500–₹4,000/day — one of the cheapest months to visit
March — Transition Month, Unpredictable
Temperature: 4°C to 15°C in Srinagar
March is Kashmir thawing — snow melts in Srinagar but holds in Gulmarg. Weather is unpredictable (you might get sunshine and snowfall on the same day). The Tulip Garden opens in late March (around March 25-26), and crowds haven't arrived yet.
Do: Early tulip season (fewer crowds than April), last chance for Gulmarg snow
Skip if: You want guaranteed clear weather — March is a gamble
Pro tip: Book the last week of March for both tulips AND snow in Gulmarg
April — Tulip Season (The Instagram Month)
Temperature: 8°C to 19°C in Srinagar
April is when Kashmir explodes on social media. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar — Asia's largest — hits peak bloom in the first two weeks of April (roughly April 5-15). Gulmarg still has snow at higher altitudes, giving you the rare combo of flowers and snowfall in the same trip.
Do: Tulip Garden (morning visit — afternoons get packed), Gulmarg Gondola (snow at Phase 2), Shikara ride on Dal Lake
Book early: Houseboats and hotels fill up 3-4 weeks in advance during tulip season
Budget: ₹3,500–₹5,500/day — mid-range, rising toward summer rates
May — Summer Begins, Everything Opens
Temperature: 12°C to 24°C in Srinagar
May is when Kashmir fully wakes up. All roads are open, every activity is operational, and the weather is perfect — warm days, cool nights. This is the best month for families with school-going children (summer holidays start). Pahalgam and Sonmarg are at their greenest.
Do: Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Sonmarg glacier point, full Srinagar sightseeing
Crowd alert: Second half of May gets busy as North Indian plains hit 40°C+ and everyone heads to Kashmir
June — Peak Season, Peak Prices
Temperature: 15°C to 29°C in Srinagar
June is the most expensive month to visit Kashmir. Hotels charge peak rates, houseboats are fully booked, and popular spots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are crowded on weekends. The weather is excellent — warm but not hot, long daylight hours.
Do: Everything — this is Kashmir at full capacity
Budget: ₹5,000–₹7,000/day — highest of the year
Pro tip: Visit Monday-Thursday to avoid weekend crowds and get 15-20% lower rates
July — Monsoon Starts, Crowds Thin
Temperature: 18°C to 30°C in Srinagar
July brings the monsoon — not the heavy coastal rain you see in Mumbai or Kerala, but intermittent showers and occasional heavy spells. The valley stays green and gorgeous, crowds drop sharply, and prices come down. The risk: occasional landslides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Do: Srinagar city (rain doesn't stop most activities), Mughal Gardens look lush
Skip: Sonmarg and higher-altitude roads (landslide risk)
Budget: ₹3,500–₹5,000/day — good value if you're OK with rain
August — Monsoon Peak, Best Avoided
Temperature: 17°C to 29°C in Srinagar
August is the wettest month and the least recommended for tourism. Heavy rain, landslides, and road closures are common. If your only option is August, stick to Srinagar city and houseboats — avoid mountain roads.
September — The Hidden Gem Month
Temperature: 12°C to 25°C in Srinagar
September is Kashmir's best-kept secret. Monsoon ends, crowds haven't returned for autumn yet, prices are moderate, and the weather is crisp and clear. The apple orchards start showing fruit, and the light is perfect for photography.
Do: Everything that's open in summer, minus the crowds. Best month for photographers.
Budget: ₹3,000–₹4,500/day — excellent value for what you get
Pro tip: September is arguably the best overall value month in Kashmir
October — Chinar Season (Kashmir's Autumn)
Temperature: 6°C to 20°C in Srinagar
October is when Kashmir turns gold and crimson. The Chinar trees (Oriental Plane trees) that line every road change colour, and the valley becomes a painting. This is the most romantic month — ideal for honeymoons and couples. Crowds stay manageable because most tourists don't know about Kashmir's autumn.
Do: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh in autumn colours, Shikara ride at golden hour, Pahalgam
Honeymooners: This is your month. Book a premium houseboat on Dal Lake.
November — Late Autumn, Transitioning to Winter
Temperature: 1°C to 12°C in Srinagar
November is the quiet month — autumn colours fading, winter not yet arrived, most tourist infrastructure winding down. The first snowfall sometimes hits Gulmarg in late November. Good for budget travellers who want solitude.
Do: Srinagar at its most peaceful, empty Mughal Gardens, early Gulmarg snow (if lucky)
Budget: ₹2,500–₹3,500/day — among the cheapest months
December — Snow Returns, Christmas Magic
Temperature: -2°C to 6°C in Srinagar, -6°C in Gulmarg
December brings reliable snow to Gulmarg and turns Srinagar into a winter wonderland. Christmas and New Year in Kashmir has become increasingly popular — Gulmarg hotels sell out for the last 10 days of December. Early December offers snow with better rates; last week is peak winter pricing.
Do: First skiing of the season, snow photography, Christmas on a houseboat
Book by: October if you want December 25-January 1 in Gulmarg

Our Recommendation
If you're visiting Kashmir for the first time, go in April (second week) for tulips + snow combo, or September for best value with great weather. For honeymoons, October's autumn colours are unbeatable. For snow and skiing, January-February is the real deal.
Skip August unless you have no other option — the monsoon makes road travel risky.
